The History of The Greyhound Hotel

The Greyhound Hotel situated in Shap has a rich history covering many years.

1. Listed Building, The Greyhound Hotel is a Grade 2 listed building. there are many dated stones around the site with the oldest being in the old kitchen fireplace dated 27th August 1680.

2. Royal Connection: Due to the years of history this site spans there is non doubt a Royal Connection. it is believed the Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at the Greyhound back in 1745. It is also believe that King Charles the 2 passed by and rested with his army back in 1651 after the battle of Dunbar.

3. Coaching Inn : For many years the Greyhound Hotel has served as a coaching inn. A popular stop off for years on the way to and from Scotland. The site of modern day has 11 letting rooms and still serves the same function.

4. Market Town: Despite its small size not many people will know that Shap is known as a market Town.  Despite its small size, Shap was legally a market town with a charter dating from the 17th century. This meant that it had the legal right to hold a market, which would have further boosted the importance of the Greyhound Hotel as a location for traveler's and traders

5. Continued Legacy: The Greyhound Hotel continues to operate today, offering food, drinks, and hospitality to both locals and visitors. It remains a testament to the enduring appeal of traditional pubs in British culture.
